The Sam’s Club at Vista Town Square Mall was evacuated after a ruptured water main caused a ruptured gas line.
Units from the Vista Fire Department and the Voluntary Emergency Response Team were dispatched to the enterprise.
Vestal Fire Chief John Paffie said a water main in the store burst and soaked some insulation.This in turn led to the rupture of a natural gas pipeline.
Water can be seen pouring down from an elevated section in the southeast corner of the store.There was a smell of natural gas outside the store.
Vestal Police Lieutenant Christopher Streno said about 10 people were assessed for possible symptoms related to gas inhalation.He said he believed three of them had been taken to hospital.No status information available.
Water pooled on the store floor near the main entrance.Water also poured into the parking lot near the store.
Store employees told potential shoppers that the business was closed until further notice.News Channel 34 reported that signs posted at the entrance indicated the store would be closed for the rest of the day.
The Sam’s Club corporate office did not respond to requests for information on the extent of the damage or when the store will resume operations.
